Getting the size right is the whole game - too small and it trips under load, too big and you've overpaid by thousands. Three things decide it:
1. Inverter size (kVA) - how much you can run at once
Add up the watts of everything you'd run at the same time during an outage. Lights, WiFi, TV and charging is a few hundred watts; add a fridge and borehole pump and you're into a 5kVA system. The inverter must comfortably cover your peak, with headroom for start-up surges on motors and fridges.
2. Battery (kWh) - how long it lasts
Battery storage decides how many hours you keep going after dark. More backup hours or heavier loads mean more kWh. Lithium batteries cost more than gel but last far longer and can be discharged deeper, which is why most 2026 installs use them.
3. Panels (kW) - how fast it recharges
